3rd Annual "Our Town" Photo Contest

     Get out your camera and search those photo albums for good photos taken around Hancock.  Plans have been

completed for the 3rd Annual 2008 "Our Town" Photo Contest .

    

"Our Town"

2008 Hancock Photo Contest and Exhibition Fact Sheet

Purpose: To promote, encourage and recognize area photographers for excellence in photographic skills, and to promote community pride by exhibiting photos that characterize life in and around the town of Hancock, Maryland.

Sponsoring organizations: Hancock Area Photo Club; War Memorial Library (exhibition/reception space, collection point); Hancock ARTS Council (organizer); RE/MAX Achievers (cash awards)

Subject matter: Photos should be appropriate for the theme "Our Town", i.e. persons, places or things that demonstrate the character, institutions, traditions and lifestyle of the Hancock community - buildings, memorials, persons, scenery, animals, sports, activities, parades, cemeteries etc., in and near the city are all appropriate subjects. Photos taken by entrants since January 2002 will be accepted. Entrants will complete an entree form with relevant camera information and submit appropriate contact information (phone number, email address if available and mailing address). Entree forms are available at the library. Each photo submitted will have affixed to the back, the title, the photographer's name, phone number and approximate date photo taken.

Eligibility:: Participation is encouraged by photographers of all levels of competency (amateur or professional). Members of the ARTs Council, Hancock News, Chamber of Commerce, Library Staff and citizens were eligible to enter. Two photos per entrant can be submitted at no cost. A $5 entree fee will be charged

for each additional photo submitted. Only the judges are deemed ineligible.

Photo submissions will be at least 8 x 10 inches in size, black and white or color, from digital or film cameras. Photos must be of high enough resolution and

quality to be displayed clearly in an 8 x 10 or larger format. High quality computer prints are acceptable. See coordinator for sources of low cost 8 x 10 prints.

Submissions do not need to be framed. Entrants agree to allow the free use of submitted photos to be reproduced in newspapers, online, or in advertising for

the photo contest and for the community. Photos submitted may also be used in a Hancock downtown window display.

Photos must be received by May 31, 2008. They can be delivered to Marilyn Pontious, librarian at the War Memorial Library in Widmeyer Park, or mailed

to the Town of Hancock, c/o Photo Contest, 126 West High Street, Hancock, Md 21750. If return of the photos by mail is required, a self addressed

postage paid mailing envelope must be provided. Entrants are responsible for following the delivery and pickup instructions outlined herein.

The ten photos that are judged to best meet the criteria above will be selected by June 15 and the entrants so notified. Eight by ten photos selected will be

matted and framed for display by the coordinator with materials provided by the Hancock Area Photo Club. The photographer of larger sized entrees will

be required to frame and mat their photos for viewing (plain black frames with white mats.) The larger photos selected will be picked up at the library for

exhibition by June 27.

The 10 photos selected by the judges will be exhibited July 1 till September 30, 2008 at War Memorial Library following a reception where the winners

will be announced.

Awards: The Grand PRize Winner will receive $100. There will also be a second place winner of $50, and two winners of $25 prizes. All other photos

selected for display will receive an honorable mention designation. All photos exhibited at the library or in a downtown window display will be picked up

at the library between Oct 1 and Oct 15. Any photos not picked up will become the property of the Hancock Area Photo Club.
